Bali Etiquette and Traditions: What a Guest Needs to Know
Temples and dress code, ceremonies, Nyepi, tipping.
Bali is a Hindu island with its own customs. Knowing basic etiquette makes your stay respectful and comfortable.
Temples and Dress Code
In temples — sarong and sash (provided at the entrance). Shoulders and knees must be covered. Do not go above the level of a Balinese person's head and do not step on offerings on the ground.
Ceremonies and Prohibitions
Balinese ceremonies are frequent; please respect roadside processions. Prohibitions: entering a temple during menstruation, touching a Balinese person's head, stepping on offerings (canang sari).
Nyepi — Day of Silence
Once a year (March–April) — Nyepi: day of silence, no traffic, lights, or work. The airport is closed. Plan your event dates taking Nyepi into account.
Tipping
Tipping — 5–10% in restaurants, $1–2 for the maid, $2–5 for the driver per day. Not mandatory, but appreciated.

Why We Are Writing This Guide
The Events Bali blog is not marketing, but practice. We have been living on the island for 8 years, hosted 300+ events, and know Bali from the inside: which beaches are empty in the morning, where the sunset dips into the water, when it is cheaper to fly, and what documents are required. Every guide is based on real experience, not a TripAdvisor retelling.
We update articles regularly: prices — once a quarter, visas and documents — when changes occur. If you find something outdated, write to WhatsApp, we will check and fix it. If you want an event in Bali, we will calculate the estimate in 1 day after a 15-minute brief.

Practical Tips from the Events Bali Team
This guide is not a TripAdvisor retelling, but the practice of 8 years of work in Bali. We live on the island, host events weekly, and know how everything works here: from traffic jams to the best time for a sunset shoot. Below are answers to frequent questions asked by couples and companies before the trip.
If you did not find the answer, write to WhatsApp, we will reply within an hour. If you are planning an event, we will calculate the estimate in 1 day after a 15-minute brief. Consultation is free and carries no obligation.
How to prepare for an event in Bali
Preparation depends on the type of event and the number of guests. For a wedding with guests, allow 3–6 months: location selection, bookings, visas, flights. For a proposal — 5–7 days. For a corporate event — 1–3 months. The earlier we start, the more choices we have and the lower the prices.
Preparation checklist: determine the date and number of guests, choose the format (wedding, proposal, corporate event), agree on the budget, prepare documents (passports valid for 6+ months), book flights and accommodation, secure e-VOA visas. The rest is on us.
Budget: what to look out for
The event budget in Bali consists of five items: location (15–25%), decor (15–20%), catering (25–30%), shooting (15–20%), coordination and vendors (10–15%). Hidden costs: transfers, tips, venue taxes, backup plan. In-depth details — in the guidehow much does a wedding in Bali cost.
How to save without losing quality: green season (prices 20–30% lower), a weekday instead of a weekend, reducing decor to accents, video teaser instead of a full movie. The main thing in the estimate is the number of guests: each guest adds $50–90 to catering.
Seasons and weather
Dry season (April–October) — stable weather, sunsets without rain, high occupancy and prices. Green season (November–March) — lower prices, nature is greener, rains are usually short (1–2 hours in the evening). The best months are May, June, September: weather is stable, occupancy is below the peak. More details —seasons and weather.
For any season — a backup plan. The villa has a covered terrace, the beach has a canopy or transfer to a resort. Transfer is free, the timeline is adjusted in 20 minutes. Weather in Bali rarely ruins an event — it simply changes the scenery.
Logistics and transport
Bali is a 12–15 hour flight from Moscow, +5 hours difference. For a group: group transfer (minivan or bus), coordinator at the airport, room block in a resort. Between districts: Canggu→Uluwatu 50–70 min, Canggu→Ubud 60–90 min. More details —transport in Bali.
For guests, we recommend 2–3 days before the event for acclimation. A welcome dinner on the evening of arrival is a good reason to gather everyone. After the event — a day of recovery and departure. Activity scheduling is managed by the coordinator.
Visas and documents
Citizens of the Russian Federation and CIS need a visa for Bali. Two options: visa on arrival (VOA, $35, 30 days) and electronic e-VOA (processed in advance online). Extension — another 30 days through the immigration office. For the event: passports valid for 6+ months, return ticket, proof of accommodation. More details —visa and documents.
For official marriage registration — additional documents: birth certificate, certificate of marital status, religious ceremony. We assist from documents to apostille. Most couples choose a symbolic ceremony — without paper bureaucracy.
Safety and health
Bali is a safe island for tourists. Basic measures: bottled drinking water, sunscreen (SPF 50+), repellent in the jungle, insurance with coverage from $30,000. First aid kit is with the coordinator at every event. Medicine — international clinics in Denpasar and Canggu.
For guests with children: fenced play areas, lifeguards at the pool, coordinator supervises children throughout the celebration. For guests with limited mobility — venues with an elevator or ramp.

Practical tips
Over 8 years of work in Bali, we have gathered dozens of practical observations that cannot be found in guidebooks. We share what really works — without tourist gloss and regulatory exaggeration. These tips will save you time, money, and nerves when planning an event on the island.
Typical planning mistakes
- Underestimating logistics time — traffic jams do happen in Bali, allow +30% to travel time
- Ignoring the green season — rains are short, but without a backup plan the event is at risk
- Overloading the program — too many activities in one day tires the guests
- Saving on a coordinator — without one, on the event day you are working instead of celebrating
- Choosing a location based on photos rather than a scout — reality often differs from renders
- Insufficient budget for decor — decor sets the mood more than the location
Pre-trip checklist
- Passport (6+ months valid), return ticket, insurance from $30,000
- e-VOA visa issued in advance (saves time in the airport queue)
- Accommodation and airport transfer booking
- Agreed budget and contract with the agency
- Light clothing made of natural fabrics, SPF 50+, repellent
- Power adapter (type C/F, 230V)
- First-aid kit: painkillers, stomach relief, plasters
Budget: what to look out for
An event budget in Bali consists of five categories: venue (15–25% of the budget), decor (15–20%), catering (25–30%), shooting (15–20%), coordination and vendors (10–15%). Hidden costs: transfers, tips (5–10%), venue taxes (5–21%), backup plan. Allocate a 10% reserve for unforeseen expenses.
How to save without losing quality: green season (−20–30% on prices), weekday (10–15% venue discounts), fewer guests (the main item in the budget is catering $50–90/guest), video teaser instead of a full movie, decor accents instead of full decoration.
